Dominant Color:
stone ware clay, terra sigillata

This dramatic smoke fired globe urn has embossed leaves that ring the top of the pot. There are shades of smoky gray, taupe, earth brown and charcoal black. It was finished with terra sigillata, an ancient Roman formulation of very fine clay, used to give their pots sheen and to make them less porous. All the pictures shown are of the same pot, with 3 different lids.

The method of making smoke fired pots remains virtually unchanged since ancient times. Traditionally pots were fired in a pit with dung and straw. Today we bisque fire our wares first, to increase their strength. After that I pack my pots in a perforated barrel filled with wood shavings and twigs. I light it and leave it to smolder for 2 to 4 hours, depending on how dark I want my pots to be. They are then cleaned and polished.

This urn holds 8 1/2 cups, the contents of a standard temporary cremation container. It is a 7" sphere, and 7" tall. Smoke fired pots should be protected from the effects of weather.
