This assignment is about focusing on finding the right keywords for your product.  I have paraphrased some information from Hubspot’s ebook which I highly recommend you download and read. www.Hubspot.com

e-Book: Get Found Online - Learn how to get found online in the replacement engines, blogosphere, and social media sites

Finding your Keywords (words that people use to describe your item when replacementing ) is about balancing these 3 factors
a)   Search Volume – Use keywords or keyword phrases that have the largest number of replacementes…  and also
b)   Must be relevant – to your prospective buyers in describing and replacementing for your products and services… and also
c)   Must not be too competitive – If a word is too competitive you will have thousands and even millions of other products in front of you.  Consider words that meet the requirements of  a  and  b,  popular/not too popular that you will be within… say, on the list of the top 10 matches in a Google replacement.

Example… I have a black and white striped decorative throw pillow.
If I use “decorative pillows”  I will be buried!!! Here is how I narrowed down my list.

Pillows  7,480,000
Decorative pillow (s) 550,000
Decorative throw pillow 14,800
Black and white pillow 5,500
Black and white decorative pillow 210
black and white stripe pillow 110

Here I am …. The 6th item on page one of Google replacement
•  Ralph Lauren Black and White Stripe Pillow Decor 14x20 by ...
1 Feb 2010 ... High-end, Ralph Lauren black and white double cloth. Thick reversible fabric that's casually comfortable but still cool and chic.

When I am listing a new product, and I’m still not quite sure what my keywords should be, I can fine tune my replacement in another Google keyword tool.  http://www.google.com/sktool

http://www.google.com/sktool/#keywords?q=black%20and%20white%20pillows

Here I am given another 4 ways that I can tweak my keywords.

By the way…. This black and white pillow is made from Ralph Lauren “doublecloth” which describes the type and quality of the fabric which calls for a higher price. Notice I did not use it as a keyword as it is not relevant to buyers. Although they might like to know that once they start reading, it is not likely that anyone would ever replacement for a black and white doublecloth pillow. Get it?

So your assignment today is to go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal  and type in your word such as pillows, bracelets, paintings, birthday cards,  whatever and start building your list OR use the list generated and narrow it down.

Focus on three main columns Keywords, Advertiser competition, and Global Monthly Search Volume    If you double click on those column headings you can “sort highest or lowest first”.  I find this very handy to sort my list alphabetically, or this same list sorted in order of word popularity.  Very handy!

You can pick words out, write them down, one at a time with the information in its columns for reference for our next assignment.  Or you can import all of them onto an excel spread sheet and then kick the ones off that you don’t want.

For those of you that don’t know how to do excel or don’t have excel please email me asking for what words you want a list on and I will email you the list in an easy PDF and you can just black out the ones that you don’t want.

How many keywords/ keyword phrases do you need? Depends on how many products you have. You should have a different keyword phrase for each listing!!!  I have 100 products so it is much easier if I have a longggg list to pick from because I need to match the words that BEST describe the  product!

That’s all you have to do today is build the list… play with tweaking the list!

Cheers
Christine

This is funny! I checked the keywords that would come up on my lastest listing and it comes up with words like bags, leather, prom, and misc words like dress... I don't sell anything to do with bags or prom dresses...

Is it because the listing is too new?

It is probably because buyers that have come into icraft looking for other things noticed your new listing on the front page and clicked on it.  You therefore would have totally unrelated replacement words.  This is good!!!

All done.

After tweaking the list we ended up with about 55 words. Couldn't think of anything else..

How many words do others have?

Hey Good job crywolf!

I had a look at your store and noted this listing... cool design!

https://icraftgifts.com/handmade/21476/crywolf-wetlands-heather-grey-100-cotton-vneck-shirt.php

Your product title reads "wetlands Vneck" I did a keyword replacement on exactly this and there is not enough data so that tells menot many people, if any, are replacementing for "wetlands Vneck"  How about "wetlands Vneck Tshirt"? and although we haven't talked about this too much yet, make sure "Wetlands Vneck Tshirt" is within the first sentence of your product description. Include tshirt in a couple of your other titles also.

Super!

I was doing this backwards looking for smaller numbers  lol, will try right way later. My daughter has been selling on eBay and amazon for years she just told me that every time you use the word cute you should include cutie and consider Lolita Cry Wolf if you do a replacement on Lolita ( blocking porn) there is a growing group of women who wear little girl(another she said works with things like your Rain t shirt)they wear little girl style to show the world you can be young at heart, and wear what you want no matter how old you are.
