All my puzzle boxes are constructed from Beechwood because it is rich in grain, very durable, and not prone to warping or cracking. Finished outside with a clear oil base, followed by 3 layers of spray on lacquer and inside interior is coated (flocked) red. A clever hidden key is part of the design and needs to be removed to unlock. A feature developed here @ Madera Bonita and has now become our trademark. Some of the larger puzzle boxes include installation of rare earth magnets - this insures smooth opening and secure locking. My pieces are true “Intarsia”, a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intarsia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural grain patterns and color (but can involve the use of stains and dyes) to create variations in the pattern.
