Did you know that according to Canada Post, tax is not charged on international shipping, and that includes packages going to the U.S.

Now, having said that, if you go to a Postal Outlet, i.e., one in a pharmacy or convenience store, there is a strong chance that they will add on tax.  Canada Post actually started a complaint on my behalf today when I mentioned that a young fellow at an outlet insisted that if a shipment was over $5.00, which is every single shiipment that won't fit through the slot of doom, the 2cm slot, then he had to  charge tax.  Canada Post advised me that these outlets can markup the cost of Canada Post items that they sell, such as boxes, envelopes or bubble wrap, but should not be charging tax, especially when Canada Post doesn't charge it.

Three separate people at Canada Post have now advised me that we shouldn't be paying tax, and one very kind woman suggested when I'm on the Canada Post website, www.canadapost.ca, to go to ship-in-a-click and print my own shipping label.  She said if I do this I will see that at no point in the process with tax be added to my shipment.  She also very kindly gave me the following number:  1-866-511-0546, the number for the help desk, and said if I have any problems they will walk me through it.

I will definitely be using the ship-in-a-click the next time I send a package to the U.S.

Interesting!

Most often I do my posting from a Canada Post wicket in the drug store. I asked them one time about their prices ... any different than Canada Post. She said no, the prices were set by Canada Post.

Next week I will check at ourl ocal post office and ask them also what they know about this.

Thanks for the heads up on it!

I'm not charged tax on my US packages at my outlet.  They always charge exaclty the same rates as what is posted on the Canada Post website.
