Why I might not open a second shop

I was prepared to open a second shop on iCraft until I checked out shipping within Canada.  I have my first shop on iCraft and Etsy and ship to the U.S, so I forget how bad Canada Post can be when it comes to shipping within our own country.

My new product, a baby bib, would weigh 1 1/4 ounces and would ship in an envelope that would be about 8 x 8 and quite flat.  According to Canada Post's website, to ship this across Canada would cost me over $11.84 plus tax.  They really don't want our business do they!

I can ship the same envelope to  Iowa, for example, in the U.S. for $2.38.

Unless anyone has any suggestions, I just don't see how I could possibly ship within Canada.

Thanks.

Pam

I can't defend Canada Post, but, Canadian customers.... well, knowledgeable ones, will be aware that Canada Post's pricing is not in our control.  They can also look up the pricing themselves if they suspect a seller of gouging.

Yes, it looks bad on your listings but, ultimately, the buyer bears this cost, not the seller.  So, if buyers are already aware of the nigh prohibitive Canada Post shipping costs, then it is not a problem for the seller!

(I'd still be grumbling all the way to the post office though.)

Can you fit it in a regular rectangular envelope instead of square?  I wonder if square costs more.  I know for lettermail, squares cost more.  That's why I resisted listing any ever-so-popular square cards in my shop, because it means my end customer has to pay extra postage to get it to their recipient.  (And that's a peeve of mine.)

You said your item would be quite flat.  Would it be flat enough that your package would be less than 2cm thick?  If so, then you can send by oversize lettermail within Canada, which would cost you $1.28 to about $ 2.10 depending on the weight.  Check this find a rate link.

If your package is over 2cm thick, then yes, your cost will be higher, but it shouldn't be that much cheaper to the US.  A little cheaper, but not that much.
