Cabbagetown is located in downtown Toronto, bounded by Wellesley, Parliament, and Gerrard streets and the Don Valley Expressway, easily accessible by public transit. The correct name for the area is Don Vale, but the name Cabbagetown, from the habit of its first residents to grow cabbages on their front lawns has stuck. The name was popularized in the Hugh Garner novel about the area.

The neighbourhood has changed since the days when it was known as the "largest Anglo-Saxon slum in North America"; it has been renovated, rebuilt, and retouched to become a heritage neighbourhood where many famous Canadians in the arts live. The Victorian architecture and narrow streets attract tourists year round.

The Cabbagetown Festival and the Riverdale Farm Fall Festival have been held for the past nineteen years on the weekend after Labour Day and have grown to attract over 20,000 people. The festival starts on Thursday night and continues through Sunday: Parliament Street is closed to traffic on Saturday for the annual parade and all-day entertainment. Sidewalk caf?s and garage sales abound.

The Cabbagetown Art & Crafts Sale is held in Riverdale Park, right beside Riverdale Farm in the centre of Cabbagetown. The farm represents a turn of the century small family farm with a farmhouse, barn, and a variety of heritage breed farm animals. The Riverdale Farm Fall Festival includes craft demonstrations, corn roasts, fiddle playing, children's activities and a barn dance Saturday night. You will also find great restaurants and, for out-of-town visitors, bed & breakfasts close by (do visit the Old Cabbagetown Toronto Site). As you can tell, the Cabbagetown Art & Crafts Sale is in the middle of a lot of activity. Each year 170 artists and craftspeople exhibit in the juried sale, which is known as a place to find high quality items. Admission for visitors to the sale is FREE! The sale is also a community fund raising activity. Proceeds from the exhibitors' fees go to BarnyardArts, a visual art and crafts programme at Riverdale Farm, and other neighbourhood charities and arts organization

Because of the number of activities taking place all weekend, it is strongly recommended that visitors come to Cabbagetown by TTC:
Subway to Castle Frank Station, Parliament Street Bus to Winchester Street, walk east to end of street.
(Please note that the buses may be diverted on Saturday and Sunday due to the closing of part of Parliament Street. In that case, take either the Parliament or Wellesley bus to Wellesley Street and walk south to Winchester Street, then east to the park.)
OR
Take the College/Carlton/Gerrard Streetcar to Sumach Street (at Gerrard) and walk three blocks north.
(Please note that the streetcar may be divered along Dundas Street between Church and Parliament streets on Saturday and Sunday due to the closing of part of Parliament Street, but will turn north onto Parliament and then east along Gerrard to Sumach Street.)
