This is a family legacy since the beginning of the twentieth century in the old Medina of Fez, the first capital of the Kingdom of Morocco founded in 789. Since the inception of the city, tanning industry has been continually operating in the same fashion as it did in the early centuries. Today, the tanning industry in the city is considered one of the main tourist attractions and the leather produced in the tanneries is exported all over the world. My grandfather was a copper engraver, my father used to be a leather tanner and artisan and I was born in the middle of those handicraft treasures, culture differences and also difficult conditions. I've been always the first of my class and drawing was my only passion since I was a kid. Thanks to God in the first place, then my ambitious father who is always believing in me, I succeeded my studies and got a scholarship in Canada. That was really unbelievable, we even thought about it for a moment, especially in our case, I mean I went out of my city twice in my life, three times if I consider traveling to Canada. That was a great moment of change, things became different but ambitions were still the same. Even with my Master degree, I've never quit drawing and thinking about how lucky I was and that there must be a reason for having this opportunity. So I took some design courses in an art and design institute in Montreal and started making my first tries. I admit that it was easy for me to draw rather than imagine, but where I came from we can never be more inspired. 3 years ago, I set up my own workshop "Taklidia" and a handicraft art and design institute for children with the great help of my friend Anas who is in charge of everything in Fez. We recently decided to go online for one and only reason to help growing the artisan's children dreams and life conditions, so most of the income goes to the institute. I've never been more proud in my life, and will continue making things bigger!
