Libby’s Story

Meet Libby, a 4 lb little Maltese-Chihuahua mix we adopted when she was about 9. In her short 5 years, she taught many lessons of life, love, joy and sadness.

Was she the smartest dog that ever lived? Not by a long shot—in fact, she was really challenged in the intelligence arena but that never stopped her from getting things accomplished. So, I learned that, no matter what, if the will is strong enough, you will eventually be successful.

Was she the most beautiful dog that ever lived? Not the most beautiful, but among the cutest. So, I learned that an appreciation of one’s self image does not necessarily rely on being beautiful.

Was she the most graceful and athletic dog that ever lived? A resounding nope. She moved like a puppet whose strings were all being pulled in different directions. Gawky doesn’t even begin to describe her. So, I learned that grace and dignity don’t always reveal themselves in motion.

Was she the most active dog that ever lived? Libby perfected the art of napping, so I learned that rest and relaxation allows the mind to be quiet and the heart to be heard.

Was she the most playful dog that ever lived? Libby didn’t know how to play but she did like to dance; we have no idea what her life was like before she was rescued and came to us. Based on her fear of anything close to her head and her terrible teeth and gums, neglect and abuse are probably a good bet. So, I learned the value of play and taking time to have fun.

Was she the most affectionate dog that ever lived? Libby loved a lap, especially mine. She was a Mama’s dog from the get-go and even worked up a little smile when I returned from a trip. She could not WAIT to get under the covers at night and curl up with me. So, I learned that intimacy is a powerful expression of love.

That little white fluff dog reminded me daily that kindness is a gift that returns to you a thousand-fold so be kind whenever you can. Libby waits for me at the Rainbow Bridge and one of these days, we’ll walk over together. Until then, I’ll miss her every day and practice all those things she taught me. I hope this jewelry reflects the fun, love, joy and whimsy that she brought to my life.
