CPSIA - Must Read

If you sell items that will be used for or directed to children 12 and under, and this includes jewellery, clothing, toys, quilts, to name a few, and you ship them to buyers in the U.S, you need to familiarize yourself with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).  On Thursday the 25th of March on another forum there will be an open discussion with representatives from the CPSIA and you can post questions that you'd like them to address.

At best this has been very confusing.  It doesn't just apply to lead in products but a myriad of other things.  I'm sitting on baby bibs that I wanted to load into a new shop.  I will be required to label these bibs before I'm able to sell to the U.S. market, and I'm hoping to find out on the 25th if this must be a permanent label attached to the garment.  Although things like yarn are now exempt if they don't contain metallic thread, items made out of yarn for children, i.e., hats, will still have to meet the labelling requirements of the CPSIA in order to sell to the U.S.

If you are an iCraft seller who falls into this category and would like more information about March 25th please e-mail me.

I contacted iCraft admin. about the new Act and they suggested I post in the forum.  I saw a post where someone else had referenced a different forum and asked people to e-mail her, so I hope this is okay.  If not, Admin, please delete.

I do know that non-compliance can result in a fine, and as we ship through Customs I'm guessing that if they wanted to play hardball we could be a likely candidate.

If you have a product in your line that is meant for children and you sell to the U.S., this isn't something you can ignore.  As Canadians we are not exempt from this.

Very true - thanks for posting.  Since I make cards and paper embellishments, I'm going to assume I am exempt.  I would assume similar paper items are exempt like journals or even children's stories.  I would appreciate if you could keep an eye about that, but you don't have to specifically ask.

Thanks for bringing it up.

Although things like yarn are now exempt if they don't contain metallic thread, items made out of yarn for children, i.e., hats, will still have to meet the labelling requirements of the CPSIA in order to sell to the U.S.

You can read more here: http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/smbus/manufacturers.html#q4

As for hats, or any product made with yarn, can be sold, without testing.
"Dyed or undyed textiles (cotton, wool, hemp, nylon, yarn, etc.), including children’s fabric products, such as baby blankets, and non-metallic thread and trim. This does not include products that have rhinestones or other ornaments that may contain lead or that have fasteners with possible lead content (such as buttons, metal snaps, zippers or grommets). "

There is a whole list of stuff that is exempt. That is a relief for me! Although I can't find any info about labelling.

Wow good point! Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I guess I will have to check out the situation for kids pillows.

Thanks

I read pages of stuff but am a little confused still.

It sounds like pillows are ok as I use non-metalic threads. It sounds like zippers are exempt. Not sure if I am required to do new labeling?

Need some help with this.  Anyone have suggestion for more reading? Hopefully an executive summary.

Cheers
Christine
