3D Printing, as it relates to how I create my things, is the process of taking a digital 3D model (think of a character in a video game, or an AUTOCAD building), and turning into a real, physical, tangible object!

The process works by dividing up the model into a series of cross sections 0.4 to 0.1mm in height, and 'drawing' the object, layer by layer, until a completed object is formed!

Depending on the size and volume of the object, the printing process can take anywhere from 1 hour all the way to 24 hours or more!

The cost of items primarily factors in materials, time, man hours, and energy used.

The focus is around Survival & Outdoor related items; but due to the uniqueness of 3D Printing technology, I have an entire inventory of different items stored on something the size of a flash drive! The ability to create what you want, when you need it, on the fly lets you customize your item in both material and color, without having to have rows and rows of shelves of pre-made inventory!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What is 3D Printing?
A: 3D Printing is the process of taking a 3D model on the computer, such as an autocad file, and 'slicing' it into a series of layers that the printer can use. Then, using that file, the 3D Printer begins 'drawing' the object, layer by layer, over the course of several hours to several days, from a variety of materials!

Q: What can you 3D Print with?
A: As far as what Durham 3D Printing is able to produce, we offer all of our 3D Printed items to be made (depending on what materials are in stock) from PLA, ABS, PETG, Polyurethane/TPU, Ninjaflex, and polymers infused with wood and metal; and an SLA-based 3D printer offering extremely detailed prints in resin!

Q: How strong are 3D Printed objects? What can they be used for?
A: 3D-Printed objects are as tough as the materials they are made from! ABS is a strong, durable polymer used for heavy-duty purposes, PETG is a food-safe material, and Polyurethane is as flexible as it is tough! You can use any 3D printed item as you would a cast or milled object of the same material!

Q: Why are some material options more expensive on your products?
A: The materials themselves that Durham 3D Printing uses for the printer (called 'filament') varies greatly in price; the price of the items in the shop reflect this. For instance; a spool of ABS or PLA is approximately $30; whereas a spool of Polyurethane is $50; and a spool of Metal Infused is $80! With metal casting, in addition to the high cost of materials, there's also the time and consumables spent. For the shop pricing method, here's the price breakdown:
> 1 x base price (PLA, ABS)
> 1.25 x base price (PETG, Polyurethane, Ninjaflex, ASA, Polycarbonate, POM, Nylon)
> 1.5 x base price (Wood fill)
> 2 x base price (Metal Infused, Sandstone Infused)
> 3 x base price (Resin)

Q: What 3D Printers do you have?
A: Currently, the Durham 3D Printing 'printer farm' constists of two Wanhao Duplicator i3 v2.1 with various upgrades, a FlashForge Finder, and a Wanhao Duplicator i7! Future upgrades include a Formlabs Form 2 to offer all items in a Resin option, a CnC machine to offer milled wood & metal versions of some of our items, as well as a laser engraver!

Q: Do you do custom printing/modelling services?
A: Absolutely! If you have an existing 3D model and are able to export it to the OBJ format, we are able to print it for you! As well, if the item needs to be modelled first, we offer modelling services for $30 (CAD) an hour! For more information, feel free to e-mail us or contact us through here for a free quote.

Q: Why do some of your listings have blue/other computer-rendered images instead of actual photographs?
A: As most of our products start off as 3D Models on the computer, it allows us to provide an accurate, temporary image of what the buyer will be getting, until we have an opportunity to replace those images with real photographs of a print!
