high fire clay, glazes, Canadian white pine
A beautiful depiction of an Ancient Sumerian Anzu (Griffin) clay tile on a ready to hang solid Pinewood plaque.
Stained, this wooden plaque measures approximately 8" x 7-1/2" and is roughly 3/4" thick ( 20cm x 19cm x 18mm). The tile measures roughly 8-1/2" x 7-3/4" (20.5 x 19.5cm).
I created this single tile from high fire clay, cut the tile by hand, air-dried for several days, then carved it by hand, fired it, then glazed and returned it to the kiln for another firing.
**Only one tile like this exists, what you see in the photo is what you will receive. Colour may vary from PC monitor to smartphone screen**
Anzu or Imdugud:
In Sumerian and Akkadian mythology, Anz?» is a divine storm-bird and the personification of the southern wind and the thunder clouds. This demon?€”half man and half bird?€”stole the "Tablet of Destinies" from Enlil and hid them on a mountaintop. Anu ordered the other gods to retrieve the tablet, even though they all feared the demon. According to one text, Marduk killed the bird; in another, it died through the arrows of the god Ninurta.
