Can the custom orders only be requested after your items have sold or can you also post the same product at zero and show that you are also requesting custom orders for the same product?

Any product can have "Custom Order" option activated, but it can't be $0. You still need to specify the price. People will be asked to pay for their order upfront, provide details about the product that they want to see and then wait for it until you make it.
