Arizona woodworker discovers the Saguaro cactus! Like us on Facebook!

I recently moved back to Arizona from where I was born..We bought a house in Wittmann, AZ. Shortly after, we converted a dog kennel out back into a craft room and woodshop..of course my wifes craft room is bigger...lol. I met an old man here, Dave the Cactus Man as he's known, who has been legally harvesting cactus wood for over 13 yrs. in the Sonoran desert. He makes beautiful tables out of Saguaro cactus that has stone tops on them. I've been hooked ever since.. with his knowledge of cactus wood and my experience in woodworking I soon realized the endless possibilities of working with cactus wood. I started out making hiking sticks, and I still do...to making walking canes, candle holders, picture frames, jewelry, wind chimes, tables, wall light sconces..etc. etc. I decided to do some background checking on this cactus that is so admired by the world. I found that this majestic plant lives from 150- over 200 years. They can get to be well over 30 feet in height and have anywhere from 2- 9 or more arms on them. I found that they are each unique from their piers. It excites me so much when I'm able to bring home to my shop a (new to me but very old) piece of Saguaro wood. I have no idea what i'm going to see untill I start milling the wood. And i'm always delighted in my find! Then to be able to take this dead cactus and bring it back to life in a way that returns its beauty to it really brings me pleasure. I'm able to extend the rich history of the Saguaro cactus and put it in the hands of anyone who wants it.
